Hello, December! Last month, best month? We can certainly try! ✨
It's a wrap
Raise your hand if every December you run out of time to work on a year-end report and then vow to do one the next year ✋. Putting together a snapshot of the year is an incredibly effective way to show your institution's leaders the impact of social media, flex the vast amount of metrics available through various social media platforms, benchmark and tease out next year's strategy.
Not sure where to start with a report? We're here to help: Access our free Year-End Social Media Report template we've created for you to use as a basis for your own.
Whenever I am chatting with campus social media managers about the various ways they keep their fingers on the pulse of student conversations, I bring up Yik Yak, which is almost always followed by a groan. Sure, it's rampant with crude language, misinformation and makes me feel ancient; it's certainly not my social platform of choice. But on many campuses, it's a peek into how students really feel, and it's important for us to know what the real talk is - even if that means sorting through a lot of ick. Lurking is part of the job, and this is one platform you don't want to ignore, so go ahead and join the herd.
It's tempting to pause posting during your institution's winter break — we all deserve some time off — since campus is empty and most students are gone, however December is also a key date in most schools' undergraduate admissions timelines with early acceptances being handed out and many students using their high school winter breaks to apply. Since you may have some new eyes on your accounts, you'll want to keep your feeds fresh with occasional posts. Consider evergreen content, such as campus beauty or repurposing student features or other key differentiating messages, to appeal to the prospective student audience in December. And don't forget to start looking for user-generated content of those acceptance packet pictures or videos from proud students and their families.
